Success Story

At DPS, we really enjoy hearing our clients' success stories. Our featured stories this month are on Tacoma's Click! Network

"[The AlphaMax] enabled the technicians to be notified of alarm conditions independent of the NOC staff"

In the beginning of the Click! Network, here in Tacoma about 3 years ago, the NOC center staff providing surveillance of the broadband portion of the network could not always be as diligent as we would have liked in reporting alarm conditions, equipment failures, and important network actions to the broadband technicians.

My goal was to help them keep an eye on the network, and avoid any alarms going unnoticed, and a possible resulting service interruption.

The AlphaMax was just the right product for this application. It enabled the technicians to be notified of alarm conditions independent of the NOC staff.

Several times, during the first months of network operation, service affecting conditions were reported by the AlphaMax unit to a technician, who would then call the NOC staff to see if they had any alarms.

Thanks again for a very useful product,

8 things you need to know before selecting an SNMP proxy agent to monitor your non-SNMP managed devices

Many telemetry network managers - perhaps you - are faced with the task of collecting data from non-SNMP devices and reporting that information to an SNMP manager. The right tool for this job is an SNMP proxy agent device.

We've put together over 15 pages of information regarding the selection of network monitoring equipment (as it relates to SNMP). Be sure to visit the new library section of our website and take a look at the articles that may help you better understand SNMP monitoring.

    SNMP Tutorial Part 2:
    The Management Information Base (MIB)

Each SNMP element manages specific objects with each object having specific characteristics. Each object / characteristic has a unique object identifier (OID) consisting of numbers separated by decimal points (i.e., 1.3.6.1.4.1.2682.1).

The MIB associates each OID with a readable label (i.e., dpsRTUAState) and various other parameters related to the object. The MIB then serves as a data dictionary or code book that is used to assemble and interpret SNMP messages.

Now available! The high-capacity Remote Alarm Block can be accessed via 10BaseT

The press has certainly noticed our recent announcement of the new Remote Alarm Block 176S (RAB). In fact, the February / March 2003 issue of Remote Site and Equipment Magazine featured the RAB on the front cover. But there's more news...

The RAB was featured on the front cover of the Febrauary/March 2003 issue of Remote Site and Equipment Magazine
Front Cover: The RAB was featured on the front cover of Remote Site and Equipment Magazine.

The RAB 176N offers 10BaseT connectivity. So now there's an RAB model for both WAN (TCP/IP, UDP/IP) and private line networks (RS232, RS485, and 202 modem).

The RAB's 176 discrete alarm inputs give complete visibility of remote sites, and its four controls will allow instant response to threats to your network's integrity.

    Competitive Advantage:
    Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance

    Author: Michael E. Porter

The essential complement to the path breaking book Competitive Strategy, Michael E. Porter's Competitive Advantage explores the underpinnings of competitive advantage in the individual firm. With over 30 printings in English and translated into thirteen languages, this second volume in Porter's landmark trilogy describes how a firm actually gains an advantage over its rivals.

Competitive Advantage introduces a whole new way of understanding what a firm does. Porter's groundbreaking concept of the value chain disaggregates a company into "activities," or the discrete functions or processes that represent the elemental building blocks of competitive advantage.
