What advanced network alarm monitoring does for you

We received a letter from a client who was surprised by our claim that there is a difference between basic and advanced alarm monitoring. "What does advanced monitoring do that basic doesn't?"

We thought this was a fair question, so we wrote the following reply:

    SNMP Tutorial
Part 1: An Introduction to SNMP

Since its creation in 1988 as a short-term solution to manage elements in the growing Internet and other attached networks, SNMP has achieved widespread acceptance. SNMP was derived from its predecessor SGMP (Simple Gateway Management Protocol) and was intended to be replaced by a solution based on the CMIS/CMIP (Common Management Information Service/Protocol) architecture. This long-term solution, however, never received the widespread acceptance of SNMP.

The new NetGuardian family provides more flexible monitoring options than ever before

Many of you are aware that the NetGuardian is our best selling RTU and can be found in thousands of remote sites across the nation. What you may not know is that the NetGuardian is just one member of an entire family of products designed to enhance your network visibility.

If your company is currently using a NetGuardian, take a look at some of the options below. Whether you're expanding your alarm points, wanting to see inside a remote site, or would like to have complete control over remote door access, the NetGuardian product family is sure to have something that can help you.

The General LCD Display (GLD) allows the user to monitor an existing network from different locations by providing remote visibility of the NetGuardian's system status.

Building Access System (BAS)Building Access System (BAS)
The Building Access System (BAS) is a comprehensive building management system that allows you to specify and monitor who, when, where and how sites are accessed.

    Expansion UnitExpansion Unit
The NetGuardian can be expanded to maintain another 144 discrete alarm points using the NetGuardian Expansion units (at 48 points per unit with a 3 unit maximum). As your network grows, the NetGuardian grows with it.

Hinged Wire Wrap Back-PlaneHinged Wire-Wrap or Plugable Back Plane
Attaches directly behind the NetGuardian or NetWatchman. The Back Plane consists of two wire-wrap fields or a plugable screw lug version (no special tool required) that allow convenient termination points for your Discrete, Analog, and Control inputs. This is ideal for uses where rack space is a premium or there is no other convenient way to terminate alarm/control points. The back panel hinges open for easy access to the data (serial) ports, LAN, phone and power connections of the NetGuardian.
